About Pine Tree Academic Decathlon

The Pine Tree Program was founded in 1985 by Glenda Wood. Since then Pine Tree has advanced to the Texas State Competition twice as a large sized (5A) school and continuously since 1998 in the medium sized (4A) school category. Pine Tree begins preparing for the regional competition during their regularly scheduled class period. Practice meets are held about three times during the first semester of the school year. The team is made up primarily of twelfth graders, and is currently coached by Judy Haley and Miriam Lancaster. Other former coaches include: DeAnne Nicholson, Faye Gode, Sydney King, Gwen Gallagher, Paula Hayes, and Sondra Allen.

U.S.A.D. History-

- Academic Decathlon was first created by Dr. Robert Peterson, Superintendent of Schools in Orange County California, in 1981. Since then it has become the "most prestigious high school academic competition in the United States". Academic Decathlon stresses educational opportunity and academic excellence. The USAD Association was formed soon after. Program Description- Academic Decathlon is a high school competition based on ten subject areas in which a team of students compete with other schools by taking tests over the material. Students compete in Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Economics, Essay, Fine Arts, Speech, Interview, and Super Quiz. Each decathlete competes in all ten events. A team is made up of nine full time students from ninth to twelfth grade. Each team is made up of three honors (A) students, three Scholastic (B) students, and three Varsity (C) students. Students are categorized by their GPA which is divided as follows:

Honors: 3.75 - 4.00
Scholastic: 3.00 - 3.74
Varsity: 0.00 - 2.99

Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Winners at various competitions around the country advance to the next level. The state winners advance to the national competition. In Texas, the schools are divided up as Small, Medium, or Large depending on their enrollment. The divisions are similarly based on current UIL divisions. Beginning with the competition year 2000-2001, two teams represent Texas at Nationals. The team with the highest score, (usually a large school) and the medium school winner or small school winner in alternating years.
